AI in Historical Perspective

There is no doubt that generative artificial intelligence is transforming workflows, disrupting labor markets, and dominating headlines.

But if we step back from the media noise and place current AI investment within a historical context, a sobering truth emerges: this boom is still small.

The following chart compares the investment impulse in emerging technologies—measured as a percentage of GDP—at different historical moments.

In the 1860s, the United Kingdom allocated over 4% of its GDP to railroads. In the 1880s, the United States followed suit.
